Pass a Physical

Truck drivers need to pass the physical exam. The tests for this test include vision, a field of vision, hearing, blood pressure, and more. Companies require hiring healthy drivers to be safe on the road.

Must be English Proficient

Truck drivers should know basic English to read road signs, maps, and reports. This is also essential when communicating with the public and law enforcement.

Pass the Written Exam

Truck drivers need to take an exam on Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to meet DOT driver application requirements.

Meet Company Regulations

Trucking companies have their own requirements for the truck driver application process. Check with companies you’re interested in about their employment regulations.

Complete a Truck Driver Training Program

Before working as a commercial truck driver, you must complete a truck driver training program. Training prepares you to drive and inspect your truck according to federal and state regulations.

Complete Employer Training

Some employers provide their own truck training programs. This is to ensure that drivers know the truck well before they hit the road.

This seems like a long list to start with, but the reward of having a great career is surely out there. Just make sure to find the right CDL training school for you.

Are Felons Qualified to Apply?

It is difficult for felons to apply to truck companies. Even if the felony happens years ago, it’s still difficult. However, some trucking companies hire felons and give them an opportunity for a great career. What matters here is that you should be open and honest with your employer about any past issues.

Anyway, employers are required to run a background check before hiring you for the position. So, in case you have a criminal record, they will find it. It would be worse if they find out you have a hidden criminal record, so it would be better to tell it at first.

If you have a felony on your record, make sure that you have quality work in the past. To help you stand out on your resume, providing references for your work experience will be useful.
