The commercial truck driver’s training course’s curriculum is created in a way that individuals who are seeking a class 1 driver’s license are provided with the basic driving skills and procedures and it serves as a guide to instructors to properly deliver the training. The course is centered on reinforcing driving theory, skills, and practice, also in enhancing positive driving behaviors among commercial truck drivers.

The course’s learning objective is to assist CMV drivers in developing relevant knowledge, skills, and be aware of their job responsibilities and duties.  The curriculum creates the foundation for safe on-the-road practices, while on-the-job orientations and training under the instructions of an experienced and qualified commercial truck driver will help drivers to learn more advanced driving skills after the completion of the commercial truck driver’s training courses.

The course is designed for both the classroom and outside practicals with three learning environments; in class (theory) in the yard (learning about the vehicle) and in the cab (behind the wheel driving skills)

Requirements For Participating In Commercial Truck Drivers Training Courses

To participate in the commercial truck driver’s training course, you must meet the following requirements;

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • You must hold a non-probationary and valid driver’s license.

What is MELT training?

Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is a required training course for drivers who want to obtain a class 1 driver’s license. Starting from September 1, 2019, you must complete the approved mandatory entry-level training (MELT) course before you can apply for a road driving test to obtain a class 1 license and be able to drive a commercial semi-trailer truck.

 

Mandatory entry-level training courses will take a minimum of 121.5 hours of quality training which covers the important knowledge and skills for operating a semi-trailer truck safely. The training objective is to ensure the safety of all public roadways users. After completing this training, there’s no need for drivers to take the training again in the future.

Drivers who hold an existing and valid class 1 license issued before September 1, 20199 do not have to do a retest and they are not required to take MELT.

MELT is the agricultural industry’s requirements are deferred. The deferral allows an extension till March 2021 to allow drivers to have time apart from harvest season so that they can be able to complete the mandatory entry-level driver’s training. Agricultural workers are allowed to take the class 1 road without completing MELT to obtain a conditional class 1 license. To apply for the class 1 road test, applicants are required to request for the agricultural deferral and also meet every other requirement for a  class 1 license.

Other training courses include;

A 244-hour Professional Truck Driver Training Course, which can only be offered at private vocational institutes that have fully met the MELT requirements. Any driver who has evidence of completing the 244-hour driver’s training course may book a road test and attempt to obtain a Class 1 license after 1, September 2019.

How much does an HGV 2 training cost?

A standard Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) training may turn out to be effective in a lot of trainees in a short period while others may require more time. The cost of the classes are divided under there course standards, they are;

  • Gold Course; This course offers up to 12 hours of training at a fee of 699 Euros also if you pay a 50 percent upfront deposit, you get a free content pack valued at 25 Pounds for Module 2, you get to save  109 Pounds in total.
