Of those, 994 are Satisfactory, 229 are Conditional and 8 are Unsatisfactory. Ratings track fleet size: 37% of the 549 carriers with 50 or more trucks are rated, compared with 4.4% of the 14647 carriers with fewer than 10 trucks. Many ratings are also old. The median year of the current rating is 2010, and only 246 were issued in the last five years. The largest Satisfactory-rated fleets are Dayton Freight with 2278 trucks, STG Drayage LLC with 1384 and Hc Transport Inc. with 1297. A missing rating does not mean a carrier is unsafe.

How safety ratings work

FMCSA assigns a safety rating of Satisfactory, Conditional or Unsatisfactory to a carrier after it reviews the carrier’s safety practices. Most carriers have never been reviewed, so most carry no rating. Larger fleets are more likely to have been reviewed: 37% of Ohio carriers with 50 or more trucks hold a rating, compared with 4.4% of carriers with fewer than 10 trucks. Use the FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot to check any carrier, and read our guide to Ohio trucking companies for the full directory.

About this data

This post is compiled by the America’s Driving Force team from the FMCSA Motor Carrier Census, a public U.S. Department of Transportation dataset, queried September 29, 2026. Carriers are counted by the physical address on their federal record, so a national carrier appears under its home state. Only active for-hire carriers with operating authority are included; school bus, waste, towing, taxi and limousine operators, railroads and truck-rental fleets are excluded. Truck and driver counts are self-reported. Read the full method on the Ohio page.

Frequently asked questions

How many Ohio trucking companies have a safety rating?

1,231 of the 16,882 active for-hire carriers registered in Ohio (7.3%) hold an FMCSA safety rating as of September 2026: 994 Satisfactory, 229 Conditional and 8 Unsatisfactory.

Does a carrier with no safety rating have a bad safety record?

No. Most carriers have never received a rating, because FMCSA assigns one only after it reviews a carrier. A missing rating does not mean a carrier is unsafe. Check the carrier's federal record for its inspection and crash history as well.

How do I check a carrier's safety rating?

Look up the carrier's USDOT number on the FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot. Each carrier in our directory links to its official federal record.
